Hillcrest Nursing Home Reserve Team Cup Final

thanks to Ken Harvey for providing this report. I couldn't keep up!

St.Dominick Res.4.        Looe Town Res.5.  (AET)

St.Dominick Reserves failed in their attempt to win the Reserve Cup on
Thursday evening when they lost by Five goals to Four after extra time in a
pulsating match at Dobwalls.

St.Dominick had a terrible start and found themselves two goals down after
only ten minutes. Ryan Powell put Looe ahead on three minutes and then Dan
Woodgate slammed in the second seven minutes later. St Dominick pulled a
goal back on fifteen minutes when the Looe keeper was unable to hang on to
a header from Jason Gregory and Pete Jonas followed up to score, but
straight from the restart, Rob Spencer ran through the middle to restore
the two goal advantage for Looe. The Saints were awarded a penalty on the
half hour and Jonas tucked away the resultant spot kick. Chris Howie in the
Saints goal then made a great save to stop Looe from increasing their lead.

Looe made a bright start to the second half and Howie made two outstanding
saves to keep St. Dominick  in the game. On seventy five minutes Jonas
completed his hat trick when he headed in a cross from Andrew Striplin to
draw the Saints level and five minutes from time Gregory fired in to put
the Saints in front for the first time. Looe were not beaten and two
minutes from time a shot from Will Glassup was deflected past Howie and
into the net to take the game into extra time.

On ninety five minutes Looe scored the all important winner when Ryan
Powell was allowed time to fire the ball into the net. The rest of extra
time was fairly frantic and Looe had a chance to go further ahead when they
were awarded a penalty but the spot kick hit the bar and sailed over.
St.Dominick fought hard for the equaliser but to no avail and the final
whistle came with Looe just about deserving winners of the trophy.

Duchy League - East Cornwall Premier League

I attended a meeting with County Secretary Barry Cudmore, our President Len
Lobb acting in his role as County Assistant Secretary and the East Cornwall
League Chairman Chris Greenaway this week. The aim of the meeting was to
clarify the promotion/relegation criterias between the two leagues now that
the ECPL has been granted permission for 32 clubs, which will be their
final total. There were further discussions on player registrations, the
general state of football in the County and other issues relating to
relations between the Leagues. You will appreciate that I can not divulge
too much detail until Chris and myself report back to our management
committees.

The Meeting went on for over two and a half hours and addressed a number of
issues and resulted in much agreement. Hopefully it will be the beginning
of a better relationship between us. I fully accept that I have to have a
more open and responsive approach with them. To show that this relationship
is already starting to work, Chris rang me on Friday night to inform of
their decision to expel Padstow United from the ECPL for failing to fulfill
fixtures. We were the first to be informed and he later addressed his
committee with some of the issues agreed earlier in the week. I will inform
the Duchy committee on May 19th and then hopefully the two AGM's will have
settled guidelines on which to work.

Mike

Joke Of The Week

DUCHY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The first meeting of the Duchy Football League took place in Bodmin in 1965 and the League ran for the first time that year with fourteen teams. The League was formed when the St.Austell and District and the Liskeard and District Leagues met with the Bodmin and District League to discuss football in the Eastern half of Cornwall. The St.Austell and Liskeard Leagues agreed to amalgamate to form the Duchy Football League, but the Bodmin League stayed as a separate competition, and then eventually folded
as a number of it's clubs left to join the new successful competition.

Numerous clubs have come and gone over the years with a few clubs moving up through into Senior Football. After many years of trying the League eventually gained an agreement with the East Cornwall Premier League to have automatic promotion and relegation between the League's providing
ground and facility criteria are met.

Many well known men have had a hand in the running of the League over the years. In the early years Mr. P.M. Bartlett was President with Mr. W. Gunn as Chairman and Mr. S. Parnell as Secretary. The two men who really guided the League in its infancy were Mr. Tristan Scott (1974-1996) and Mr Len Lobb who was Secretary from (1970-1981). Other officers who helped in its progression are Messrs Rivers, Cutler, Truscott, Blake, Pickeard, Reed, Collings, Monk, Borman, Maynard, James, Yeo, Adkins and Husband.

Today's Management team has been in place for many seasons. John Cudlipp took over as Secretary from 1983 until 2000 when he stepped down to Assistant Secretary for health reasons. It has been his association with Mike Newcombe who took over as Secretary coupled with his long standing role as Registrations Secretary that has seen the League become the largest in Cornwall with over 2700 players registered and ninety teams in membership as of season 2003/2004. The other present day officers, Chairman Paul Stevens, Vice Chairman Colin Burrell, Treasurer Phil Edworthy and Fixtures Secretary Colin Atkins are also long serving and well respected members of this progressive League.

The biggest change came in 1994 when the League was re-constituted to accept Cornish teams that had been playing in Devon back into Cornish football. In this one season, outside clubs were allowed into higher divisions based on their respective finishing places in the Plymouth Leagues. The League now has teams competing from Newquay in the West to Launceston in the East, and back along the coast from Saltash in the South East to St.Mawes in the West. The League has become so popular and successful it has also attracted five clubs from West Devon into membership.

The League has been indebted to sponsors, which helps keep its finances in a healthy state. Currently Bodmin Sports Trophies sponsor the League competitions and Jefferys Estate Agents sponsor the Knock Out Cup trophy.
